About Wordle
Wordle is one five-letter word and six attempts to find it. Josh Wardle built it in 2021 for one person — his partner, who liked word games — and put it online later that year with a rule that turned out to matter more than the puzzle itself: everyone gets the same word, and there is only one per day.
The feedback is the whole game. Every guess colours in: green means the letter is correct and in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else, grey means it is not in the word at all. Six guesses is enough to solve almost any word by deduction, and not nearly enough to solve it by luck.
How to play
- Type any valid five-letter word and press Enter to submit it.
- Read the colours: green is right letter, right spot; yellow is right letter, wrong spot; grey is not in the word.
- Use what each guess rules out to narrow the next one. You have six attempts in total.
- Letters can repeat. Two of the same letter in your guess will only both light up if the answer really contains two.

- Tap the keys below the grid — they also record which letters you have already ruled out.
Tips
- Open with a word rich in vowels and common consonants. CRANE, SLATE and ADIEU all test five high-frequency letters at once.
- Your second guess should share as few letters as possible with the first. Repeating a grey letter wastes a whole turn.
- A yellow letter is more informative than it looks — it tells you both that the letter exists and one place it cannot be.
- Watch for doubled letters. Words like ABBEY, LLAMA and SPEED beat solvers who assume five distinct letters.
- Do not rush to guess the answer on turn three if you still have several candidates. Spending a turn to separate them is usually faster than guessing wrong twice.
Frequently asked questions
How many guesses do I get?
Six. The grid has six rows, one per attempt.
What is the best first word?
Analyses tend to favour words with common letters and distinct vowels — CRANE, SLATE, SALET and TRACE all rank highly. Any of them is a reasonable opener.
What does a yellow tile mean?
The letter is in the answer but not in that position.
Can I play more than once a day here?
This version lets you keep playing rather than locking you to a single daily puzzle.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes — use the on-screen keyboard below the grid.
